Church of England Calls for National Dialogue on AI and the Future of Work

The Church of England has urged the nation to hold an open conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing impact on employment, ethics, and human identity.

A recent edition of the Crucible journal, released this month, examines how automation and digital systems are redefining the nature of work and personal purpose. The issue follows a motion adopted by the Church’s General Synod in February 2024, recognizing the challenges of the “fourth industrial revolution.”

According to the Church’s Faith and Public Life team, technology should be used to promote the common good and serve humanity, rather than deepen inequality or disconnection.

Jeremy Peckham, who serves on the AI, Faith and Civil Society Commission, told Premier Christian News that while AI is reshaping certain industries, its influence is often overstated.

“We must ask what problems AI truly solves,” he said. “It can assist in fields like medicine and research, but it cannot replace what gives humans purpose and dignity.”

Peckham also warned that excessive dependence on AI could weaken independent thinking and moral reflection.

“Christians should consider how technology shapes their values and behavior,” he added. “The Church plays a vital role in helping people rediscover what it means to be human.”

The Crucible edition calls on faith leaders, policymakers, and the public to ensure that AI innovation encourages fairness, justice, and respect for human life.
