The family of Christian Chukwu,  the late Nigerian football legend, has officially announced that his burial will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025. This announcement was made public on Monday in Enugu, the south eastern city where Chukwu had deep personal and professional ties.

In honor of Chukwu’s extraordinary contributions to Nigerian football—both as a player and as a coach—plans are currently in motion for a national burial ceremony that befits his stature and legacy.

The main funeral rites will be conducted in Enugu, his hometown, where he began his journey to national and international acclaim. Dignitaries from across the country, members of the football fraternity, and fans are expected to attend the event to pay their final respects.

In addition to the Enugu ceremonies, a special commemorative event is scheduled to take place in Lagos—a city that played a pivotal role in Chukwu’s illustrious career. Lagos, where he spent a significant portion of his playing and coaching years with the Nigerian national team, will serve as a gathering point for friends, former teammates, admirers, and members of the football community who may not be able to travel to Enugu.

The Lagos event will provide a platform for celebrating Chukwu’s life, achievements, and enduring influence on the sport in Nigeria and beyond.

Christian Chukwu passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74. Widely regarded as one of the most iconic figures in Nigerian football history, he captained the national team—the Green Eagles—to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and later served as a coach, inspiring generations of players with his leadership and vision. His passing marks the end of a remarkable era, but his legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of Nigerians and football lovers around the world.
