CAN Mourns Rev. Uma Ukpai: Celebrating a Life Poured Out for Christ

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has joined millions of believers across the nation in mourning the passing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, a towering figure in Nigeria’s evangelical landscape. The revered preacher, known for his faith-filled crusades and healing ministry, passed away on October 6, at the age of 80.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, expressed deep sorrow over the loss while celebrating a man whose entire life was defined by an unrelenting passion for souls.

“Ukpai’s evangelistic ministry spanned over six decades, inspiring generations of believers with his message of faith, healing, and hope in Christ Jesus,” Okoh said. “He devoted his life to preaching the gospel, nurturing faith, and advancing the cause of Christ across denominations and regions.”

A Life Committed to the Gospel

Born in Asaga Ohafia, Abia State, in 1945, Rev. Uma Ukpai rose from humble beginnings to become one of Nigeria’s most influential evangelists. His journey of faith began after a dramatic personal encounter with Christ, which set him on a lifelong path of service.

Over the years, Ukpai became known for his bold preaching style, miracle crusades, and unwavering belief in the power of faith. Through the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), he traversed cities and villages, leading thousands to Christ and bringing healing and hope to countless families.

His popular crusades, including the Greater Ohafia for Christ Crusade and Nigeria for Jesus Campaign, were marked by extraordinary testimonies of transformation. Many remember his voice declaring with conviction, “You cannot be defeated when God is with you.”

A Bridge Builder Among Denominations

Rev. Ukpai’s ministry transcended denominational lines. He was often described as a unifying figure within Nigeria’s Christian community—someone who built bridges rather than walls. His message centered on Christ’s love, unity, and holiness, and he worked closely with various church leaders to strengthen interdenominational fellowship.

The Christian Association of Nigeria noted that his ministry reflected the heart of the gospel—a call to repentance, faith, and nation-building through godly character. His words frequently challenged the Church to remain the moral compass of the nation.

“May the legacy of his faith and service continue to inspire the Church and the nation,” Okoh prayed. “And may his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Tributes from Across the Nation

Following news of his death, tributes have poured in from pastors, church organizations, and believers who were touched by his ministry. Many described Rev. Ukpai as a spiritual father, a mentor, and a torchbearer of revival whose voice will be greatly missed.

In his later years, despite health challenges, Ukpai remained active in ministry, preaching, mentoring young ministers, and championing Christian unity. His humility, humor, and deep spiritual insight made him a beloved figure among both clergy and laity.

A Legacy That Lives On

As Nigeria’s Christian community mourns, there is also celebration, of a race well run and a faith kept to the very end. Rev. Uma Ukpai’s life was a living sermon of perseverance, prayer, and purpose.

He reminded believers that the gospel is not confined to the pulpit but must be lived daily with compassion and conviction. Through his foundation and evangelistic association, his vision continues to thrive, training ministers, supporting widows, and spreading the good news across Africa.

Ukpai’s message of hope remains as relevant today as ever: “No matter your trials, God still writes straight with crooked lines.”

A Final Word

In honoring Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, the Christian Association of Nigeria reminds the faithful that while heaven has gained a saint, the Church on earth must carry forward his torch of evangelism. His passing marks the end of an era, yet his legacy, rooted in faith, love, and service, continues to light the path for generations to come.
