CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH THE LIVING WATER  DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE

DATE: Thursday, September 18, 2025.
TOPIC: HUMAN RECOMMENDATION (III)
MEMORISE: Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.” (1 Samuel 16:18)
READ: 1 Samuel 16:14-22
[14]. But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.
[15]. And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.
[16]. Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.”
[17]. So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
[18]. Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
[19]. Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
[20]. And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul.
[21]. So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer.
[22]. Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”

EXPOSITION

     David, a skilled musician, stood before the troubled King Saul, due to a recommendation (1 Sam. 16:14,16). This recommendation was based on personal testimony of David’s giftedness to bring healing through music, I’ve seen him myself (cf. v. 18 MSG).
     David’s awareness of being observed remains uncertain. This teaches us the importance of making the most of every opportunity (Eph. 5:16).
     This servant listed 3 key qualities: First, the importance of prudent speech, crucial when addressing royalty. Second, the worth of physical appearance, as seen in biblical examples (Gen. 41:14; Est. 2:12: Dan. 1:10).

Previous Devotional

     Lastly, the recognition of divine presence, distinguishing believers (Gen. 41:38; Exo. 7:8-11), underscores the need for wisdom, good presentation, and seeking God’s guidance. David embodied both physical and spiritual qualities.
     While prioritizing spirituality, neglecting outward appearance entirely isn’t advocated. Avoid being careless in dressing and speech and shun the saying “No one notices me.”

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, make me worthy of recommendation.
2. Lord, help me to keep Your presence in my life.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:

CAC GHB: 743

8 8 8 D

1. Their earthly task who fail to do,
Neglect their heav’nly business too;
Nor know what faith and duty mean,
Who use religion as a screen;
Asunder put what God hath joined,
A diligent and pious mind.
2. Full well the labour of our hands
With fervency of spirit stands;
For God, who all our days hath giv’n,
From toil excepts but one in seven:
And lab’ring while we time redeem,
We please the Lord, and work for Him.
3. Happy we live, when God doth fill
Our hands with work, our hearts with zeal;
For every toil, if He enjoin,
Becomes a sacrifice divine,
And like the bless’d spirits above,
The more we serve, the more we love.
Amen.
