Anambra Bans Writing Assignments in Textbooks, Moves Against Extravagant School Parties

The Anambra State Government has outlawed the practice of pupils writing assignments inside textbooks. Officials say the measure will cut waste and allow books to be reused by younger siblings.

Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced the directive during a capacity-building workshop for private school proprietors and teachers at St. John of God Secondary School, Awka. She explained that the new policy is designed to ease financial pressure on parents and support sustainable learning.

According to her, textbooks must remain inclusive, reflecting diversity, equality, and the needs of every learner. She warned that schools, teachers, or parents who ignore the order will face sanctions. Stakeholders have also been urged to report violators to the ministry.

Beyond textbooks, the state has also moved to curb what it described as “unnecessary and costly” graduation parties in nursery and primary schools. Chuma-Udeh said many parents had raised concerns about the financial strain caused by such celebrations.

She stressed that education should not be turned into a tool for financial exploitation. “Teaching and running a school is a divine calling and must not be mortgaged for profit,” she said, noting that the government will clamp down on defaulters.

With the new measures, Anambra hopes to reduce the cost of education for families while ensuring schools focus on learning rather than expensive social events.
