A Tribute to Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo: A Beacon of Peace and Justice
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Rev. Fr. Dr. Polycarp Lubo, the Plateau State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Fr. Lubo passed away in the early hours of Sunday, following complications from a recent accident. His sudden departure is a profound loss to not only the Christian community in Plateau State but across Northern Nigeria.
Fr. Lubo was more than a priest—he was a voice for the voiceless, a champion of peace, and a tireless advocate for justice. Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, described him as a “fearless and committed servant of God”, whose passion for justice and compassion for the oppressed knew no bounds.
Many remember his powerful words during the Plateau Peace Walk: “We deserve to live.” Those four words captured the deep pain of communities plagued by violence and displacement and highlighted Fr. Lubo’s unwavering commitment to their dignity and survival.
But his work extended beyond the pulpit. Fr. Lubo was instrumental in fostering interfaith cooperation, working closely with Muslim leaders under the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development. Together, they advanced campaigns for child immunization and fought against polio—an inspiring example of unity for the greater good.

As treasurer of Northern CAN, he brought discipline, transparency, and integrity to the association’s financial operations—earning respect and admiration from his peers.
Until his passing, Fr. Lubo served as Parish Priest of St. William’s Catholic Church in Zawan, where he was loved for his humility, cheerfulness, and inclusive leadership. He was a true bridge-builder, always seeking ways to unite rather than divide.
Northern CAN has extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, Plateau CAN leadership, his parish family, and Christians throughout the state. They also called on government officials and security agencies to honour his legacy by ensuring greater protection and justice for all communities.
Fr. Polycarp Lubo’s legacy lives on—in the lives he touched, the peace he worked for, and the hope he inspired. May his memory continue to be a light in these challenging times.
