According to Tribune Online, the Presiding Pastor of Living spring Chapel International, Femi Emmanuel, has urged church leaders to participate actively in politics instead of limiting their engagement to criticism from the pulpit.

He made the call during an interview on TVC News. He said many pastors genuinely love Nigeria and desire positive change, but he believes many lack a proper understanding of how politics and governance function.

“My people, fellow pastors, fellow general overseers, they are very passionate about this country. He said many pastors labour tirelessly, remain committed to Nigeria’s future and sincerely desire to see the nation prosper. But when it comes to politics, they are completely ignorant,” he said.

Emmanuel argued that many ministers comment on government policies without taking part in the political process. He maintained that meaningful change begins where decisions are made.

He argued that criticising government from the pulpit alone is not enough, insisting that those who want lasting change should participate where laws are enacted and public policies are shaped.

The cleric, who served as Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly between 1992 and 1993, encouraged Christians, young people and other Nigerians to become active in grassroots politics. He said real political influence begins at the ward level.

“Political fathers, their power is the ward. That’s where you and I should go. He said the larger population must become involved at that grassroots level if they truly want to influence leadership and governance. That is where the youth should invade. That is where the church community should invade,” he said.

Emmanuel also addressed the debate over Muslim-Muslim and Christian-Muslim tickets. He argued that electing leaders based on religion does not automatically advance the interests of Christians or the Church.

Using former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as an example, Emmanuel questioned the emphasis on religious combinations in elections. He argued that even when a respected Christian pastor occupied the office of vice president, it did not automatically translate into direct benefits for the Church. But what did he bring to the body of Christ as a church?”

He further described the office of the vice president as one with limited constitutional authority. He insisted that Nigerians should focus more on national development than religious identity in politics.

“Our constitution says the vice president is a spare tyre. So what Christians are arguing for is, ‘We want a vice president.’ What would that bring to the church? Nothing. We are Nigerians,” he said.

Emmanuel also criticised election prophecies made by some clerics. He described many of those predictions as signs of political misunderstanding rather than spiritual insight.

When asked about ministers who claimed to receive divine revelations on election outcomes, he replied, “They don’t know. Ignorance.”

He added, “Well, you know, were you there when they heard from God? Anybody can claim to hear from God.”
