Anglican Church Calls for Conscience Voting Ahead of 2027
As political activities begin to gather pace ahead of the 2027 general election, the Akoko Edo Diocese of the Church of Nigeria Global Anglican Communion has urged politicians and political parties to allow Nigerians to vote according to their conscience without pressure or financial inducement.
The church also expressed concern over the growing threat of kidnapping in Edo State. It called for stronger cooperation between communities and security agencies to tackle the challenge and restore public confidence.
The message formed part of the Bishop’s Charge delivered by the Bishop of Akoko Edo Diocese and President of Synod, Rt Rev Ebenezer Saiki, during the 2026 Second Session of the Sixth Synod held at St Peter’s Church, Ikakumo, Edo North, on Sunday.
Speaking on the nation’s political climate, Bishop Saiki said public attention is already shifting toward the 2027 presidential election. He stressed that political competition must not weaken the country’s democratic values.
He urged political leaders to promote peaceful campaigns and respect the rights of voters. According to him, Nigeria will make greater progress when citizens choose their leaders based on personal conviction instead of financial rewards or other forms of inducement.

The bishop appealed to political parties and their candidates to create an atmosphere where every Nigerian can freely exercise the right to vote without intimidation or influence.
Addressing the security situation in Akoko Edo and other parts of Edo State, Saiki said communities must not allow fear to take over. He encouraged residents to remain united, alert, and committed to lawful collaboration with security agencies in the fight against criminal activities.
He said that although kidnappers often carry dangerous weapons, communities still have the strength to resist them through courage, vigilance, and collective action.
The cleric also highlighted the rich agricultural and mineral resources available in Edo State. He said these resources can support lasting economic growth if properly managed and developed.
Bishop Saiki commended Governor Monday Okoebholo for the ongoing repair work on the Auchi Igarra Ibillo Road. However, he urged the state government to move beyond temporary repairs and invest in permanent road infrastructure for the area.
He noted that while residents appreciate the current intervention, they also deserve the same level of development taking place in other parts of the state. He called for fair and balanced distribution of government projects across Edo.
The bishop further stressed the need to prepare young people for future leadership. He said intentional investment in the youth through proper guidance, education, and leadership development will help secure a better future for both the state and the nation.
