Mixing cold, catarrh drugs unsafe, physicians warn

Health experts are warning Nigerians to stop mixing Procold and Piriton when treating a cold. They say the habit creates a dangerous overdose that can slow the brain, weaken alertness and trigger dizziness.

Many people do not know that Procold already contains Piriton along with paracetamol and phenylephrine. Adding another Piriton tablet means the body receives too much of the sedating antihistamine. This extra dose can make people extremely drowsy and unsafe, especially when they need to drive or operate machines.

Cold and catarrh drugs work well when taken alone and in the right amount. The danger begins when people combine medicines that share the same active ingredient. The body becomes overwhelmed, and the sedative effect becomes stronger than intended.

An overdose of Piriton can cause blurred vision, dry mouth, dizziness and difficulty staying alert. Some people may even struggle to pass urine or stay awake. The risks become more severe when alcohol is taken with these medicines because alcohol increases drowsiness.

Common colds are usually caused by viruses. In many cases, the body can fight the infection without strong drugs. Rest, hydration and simple home remedies can help most people recover. Drinking plenty of water, taking warm fluids and eating fruits like oranges support the immune system. Steam inhalation can also provide quick relief for a blocked nose. A few drops of eucalyptus oil in warm water can make breathing easier.

While older sedative antihistamines are common and affordable, there are also non sedative options that do not cause sleepiness. These newer antihistamines are taken once a day and allow people to remain active without feeling heavy or slowed down. However, many people still rely on the older drugs because they are easy to find.

Cold symptoms that last longer than three days should not be ignored. A lingering cold can be a sign of a more serious problem such as sinus infection, nasal polyps or other nasal conditions that need medical attention. Treating symptoms at home without knowing the real cause can delay proper care.

Experts stress that the best way to treat a cold is to follow safe practices. Self medication can be harmful, especially when drugs with similar ingredients are combined. Many people believe taking more drugs will give faster relief, but this often leads to dangerous side effects.

Instead of mixing medicines, it is safer to use one cold remedy at a time or seek help from a health care provider. Clear guidance reduces the risk of overdose and ensures that symptoms are treated correctly.

Cold and catarrh are common, but treatment should not put people at risk. Understanding what each medicine contains and using them responsibly can prevent avoidable harm. The warning is simple: do not mix Procold and Piriton, and do not take more drugs than the body needs. Safe treatment begins with using medicines the right way.
