Clerics Urge Calm Over Trump’s Comment on Nigeria
Some Nigerian Christian leaders have urged calm following recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
They reminded Nigerians that Trump spoke as a political leader, not as a religious figure. His statement about invading Nigeria and cutting aid over alleged Christian persecution, they said, should not be taken as a faith-based declaration.
At the 85th Annual International Conference of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church Worldwide in Oyo State, senior ministers stressed that only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or his aides should respond to such remarks.
Special Apostle Moses Ademola Popoola, Director of Missions for the church, explained that Trump’s words were political. He warned clerics against turning the issue into a religious debate.
“Trump spoke as a president, not as a spiritual leader,” Popoola said. “Our role as ministers is to pray for Nigeria and guide our people, not to react emotionally. The nation’s problems will be solved through discipline, sincere prayers, and mercy toward one another, not through foreign interference.”

Special Apostle Femi Okutubo, the Conference Publicity Secretary, echoed his view. He called for unity and love among Nigerians, noting that while progress has been made, much more is needed to ease the struggles of ordinary citizens.
“Our message is simple,” Okutubo said. “We must stand together in unity and love. The nation is facing tough times, but with time, things will get better.”
Baba Aladura Oluwasegun Rufai also urged Christians to remain steadfast in righteousness and act as light in the world. He downplayed fears of hostility from Trump, describing his comments as mere political talk.
“Trump can be unpredictable, but I don’t see his statement as a threat. Even if he acts, it may be in support of Nigeria’s fight against terrorism,” Rufai said.
In his address, the Spiritual Father and Chairman of the C&S Movement Church Worldwide, Prophet Emmanuel Alogbo, reaffirmed the church’s commitment to peace and national unity. He urged Nigerians to keep supporting the government’s efforts to strengthen security and improve citizens’ welfare.
“Our country is gradually recovering from its economic and social challenges,” he said. “We must keep praying for our leaders and our nation.”
The conference, themed Great Mercy, drew thousands of participants from across the world, both in person and online. The church renewed its call for faith, compassion, and unity in the year ahead.
