69-Year-Old Woman Matriculates at University of Ibadan

In an inspiring display of determination and lifelong learning, 69-year-old Mrs Kate Bosede Akomolafe became the center of attention at the University of Ibadan Distance Learning Centre matriculation ceremony on Friday. She took the oath of admission alongside over 5,000 new students for the 2024 2025 academic session, proving that age is no barrier to education.

Clad in her matriculation gown and cap, Mrs Akomolafe’s bright smile lit up the ceremony as cameras captured the moment, she officially joined Nigeria’s premier university community. Her story quickly went viral on social media, drawing admiration from students, academics, and netizens alike.

From Retired Officer to Aspiring Social Worker

Mrs Akomolafe, a retired Data Processing Officer with R T Briscoe Motor Company, has led a remarkable life beyond her professional career. Today she is also a pig farmer and former flour distributor, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit and resilience.

Her latest pursuit is Social Work; a course she chose with a clear purpose to better manage her non-governmental organization and make a tangible difference in her community.

A Lifelong Dream Realized

Born on December 22, 1956, Mrs Akomolafe first obtained her West African School Certificate in 1976 from Government Secondary School Creek Road Port Harcourt. Nearly five decades later, she sat again for WASSCE and NECO in 2023, securing the credits necessary to pursue her lifelong dream of earning a university degree.

Her journey is a testament to perseverance and the belief that it is never too late to chase one’s educational goals.

Matriculation Ceremony Highlights

The oath of admission was administered by the University’s Registrar Mr Ganiyu O Saliu during a ceremony that welcomed fresh learners into 16 different programs under the Distance Learning Centre.

In his address, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration Professor Peter O Olapegba, who represented the Vice Chancellor Professor Kayode O Adebowale, encouraged the students to pursue excellence through intentional effort.

Titled Genuine Success is Achieved Through Deliberate Choices, Professor Olapegba’s address reminded the students that their choices, interactions, and dedication will shape the outcomes they experience at the University of Ibadan.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor emphasized that success is measured not just academically, but also by the depth of insight, resilience, and positive impact students bring to the world. He cautioned against misconduct, reiterating the university’s zero tolerance for actions that could tarnish its reputation, while encouraging students to make meaningful contributions within the vibrant UI community.
