Parents Push Back as Summer School Fees Surge Amid Economic Pressure

Parents are sounding the alarm over rising summer school fees, saying the spike could sideline many children from vital academic support during the break.

Amid a worsening economic climate, families are finding it harder to cover the cost of extra lessons. Several private schools have raised their rates, sparking concern among parents already struggling to pay regular tuition.

At Sachel Schools, summer tuition for junior students doubled from ₦5,000 to ₦10,000. Senior classes saw a similar leap from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000. Other institutions like De-Bright College, Schema School, Sonic Private School, and Stepping Firm Montessori have followed suit. The result? Fewer students in classrooms this summer.

For Tinuke Sanni, a parent at De-Bright College, the price hike is devastating. Already stretched thin by school fees, she says summer classes are now out of reach. “I want my kids to keep learning over the holidays, but we simply can’t afford it,” she said.

A staff member at Sachel Schools, who spoke anonymously, confirmed attendance is down. The source blamed the steep fees, noting that many families are seeking cheaper alternatives or skipping summer lessons altogether.

Despite the backlash, school officials say the increase was necessary. Schema School’s spokesperson, Grace Obunde, pointed to rising costs especially staff wages, learning materials, and electricity as key factors behind the decision.

Parents, however, say the hike couldn’t have come at a worse time. They fear it will widen the learning gap between students who can afford the support and those who can’t.

“Summer classes help kids stay sharp,” said Sanni. “But if prices keep going up, more children will be left behind.”

The tension highlights a growing divide in access to education, as families weigh the value of summer learning against financial survival.
