NYSC DG Urges Corps Members to Lead with Innovation

ABUJA, Nigeria The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, has urged the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members to approach the future with courage, creativity, and a sense of responsibility. He encouraged them to lead with innovative ideas and remain committed to national development as they transition into the next phase of their lives.

This message was conveyed in an official statement posted on Thursday via the NYSC’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, as thousands of corps members across the country marked the end of their one-year mandatory national service.

Brigadier-General Nafiu extended heartfelt congratulations to the outgoing corps members, commending them for their dedication, discipline, and contributions to the growth and unity of Nigeria during their service year. He highlighted the crucial role they played through their involvement in primary assignments, community development initiatives, and nation-building projects in sectors ranging from education and healthcare to agriculture and technology.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Corps Members as they celebrate the successful completion of their mandatory service year,” the statement read. “Your hard work and commitment to building a new Nigeria have not gone unnoticed.”

The Director-General acknowledged the challenges corps members may have faced during their service year, particularly in remote or underserved areas, but praised their resilience, determination, and impact on the communities they served.

“As you step into the future, I urge you to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. Rise to the occasion and become the leaders our nation truly needs,” he continued. “Be open to change, lead with confidence and innovative ideas. Go forth and represent the NYSC as its proud ambassadors.”

Nafiu’s call for innovation and leadership comes at a time when Nigeria is increasingly relying on its youth to drive transformation in governance, entrepreneurship, and social development. He reminded the corps members that the values instilled in them during their service discipline, unity, patriotism, and selfless service should remain guiding principles in their personal and professional lives.

The NYSC, established in 1973, continues to serve as a platform for national integration and youth empowerment. As each batch completes their service, the scheme aims to instil a lifelong commitment to community and national growth among its participants.

The 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members now join a growing network of NYSC alumni expected to contribute meaningfully to the country’s future across diverse fields. Many are expected to venture into public service, private enterprise, and civil society, equipped with the experiences and lessons gained during their year of national service.
