47 Million Pupils, Teachers to Get Free Laptops and Tablets From FG Initiative

The Federal Government is set to distribute free laptops and tablets to more than 47 million pupils and teachers across the country. The move is part of efforts to boost digital learning in Nigeria’s basic education system.

The initiative will cover pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary school learners. It was unveiled during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Digital Learning Network (DLN) in Abuja.

UBEC Smart Schools, which are spread across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, will serve as the hub of the program. These model schools were created to promote digital literacy and modern teaching methods.

Thomas Lamerna, Chief Executive Officer of DLN, said the project will come at no cost to either the federal or state governments. He noted that the public-private partnership will deliver access to digital devices, infrastructure, and teacher training for millions of learners.

According to him, each device will be loaded with free data, digital textbooks, and interactive learning tools aligned with the national curriculum. Funding for the program will be provided by DLN in partnership with Deloitte Financial Advisory, commercial banks, and the National Credit Guarantee Company.

UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, described the initiative as a milestone in bridging the digital divide in Nigerian schools. She said access to laptops and tablets will transform classrooms by providing virtual learning platforms and digital resources.

Garba stressed that UBEC will collaborate with state governments and school authorities to ensure fair distribution and effective use of the devices. She also revealed that teachers will undergo training to strengthen their digital skills and make the most of the new learning tools.

The project is expected to improve teaching standards and prepare Nigerian pupils for the demands of a technology-driven world.
