World Leaders Unite for Christmas in Geneva

International leaders and community figures gathered in Geneva for a Christmas celebration marked by unity, service and shared purpose. Hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, the dinner brought together diplomats, humanitarian partners and local leaders from around the world.

At its core, the event focused on gratitude and reflection. It highlighted the humanitarian and diplomatic efforts carried out in Geneva throughout 2025. From the moment guests arrived, the evening reflected goodwill, culture and a shared commitment to helping others.

Joseph and Jan Cannon, who oversee the Church work in Geneva, opened the program with words of appreciation. They thanked diplomatic missions, non governmental organizations and partners for their cooperation during the year. In addition, they spoke about joint efforts to strengthen families, assist refugees and promote peace within communities.

Among the guests was Elder Rubén V Alliaud, a senior Church leader in Europe, who attended with his wife, Fabiana Alliaud. During his Christmas message, he focused on service and light. According to him, the dinner was a simple way to thank nations and organizations that work daily to meet real needs. He explained that the Church operates globally and depends on local partners who best understand the challenges people face. In that spirit, he noted that ambassadors and humanitarian groups help bring hope to many lives.

Meanwhile, Stefano Bosco, director of the Church office in Geneva, reflected on the city’s role as a center for dialogue and cooperation. He observed that many humanitarian efforts happen quietly through coordination and service. For this reason, he said Christmas is a time to recognize unseen contributions and renew a shared commitment to helping others.

That message of generosity was echoed by the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic. He spoke about a world increasingly shaped by individual interests. However, he said the Christmas season calls people back to sharing and community, values deeply rooted in his culture.

As the evening continued, cultural performances became the highlight. Music and dance filled the room as guests experienced traditions from different parts of the world. Performers from Africa, Europe, the Pacific and Asia shared their heritage, transforming the dinner into a celebration of global identity.

Following the performances, an ambassador from the Democratic Republic of the Congo praised the display. He said the dances showed how people can come together as one family through art, movement and shared joy.

Church leaders present also spoke about unity beyond borders. Elder Joep Boudeqign Boom emphasized that love and light are universal. While cultures, food and languages may differ, he explained that compassion speaks to everyone.

Later, Elder Yves Weidmann reflected on the connections formed during the gathering. Although many guests met for the first time, he said there was an immediate sense of bond. To him, it felt like the world had come together as brothers and sisters.

Similarly, the Ambassador of the Independent State of Samoa shared that his culture is built on love, respect and humility. He added that service to others is a core value, shaped strongly by faith.

Throughout the evening, guests noted the warmth and fellowship that defined the celebration. Conversations flowed easily, and smiles were shared across tables. As many observed, Geneva’s progress in diplomacy and humanitarian action depends on cooperation between individuals and institutions willing to serve others.

Ultimately, the Christmas dinner became more than a seasonal gathering. It stood as a moment of recognition, honoring the good achieved during the year while renewing hope for continued collaboration.

As the evening drew to a close, one message remained clear. When people from different nations and cultures come together with respect and purpose, peace feels possible. The celebration served as a reminder that light grows brighter when it is shared.
