13-Year-Old Seth Makes History at UBA Essay Contest
A historic moment unfolded in Lagos on Tuesday as thirteen year old Ebunoluwa Seth Oluwatimilehin of Igando Community Senior High School became the new champion of the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition. He is the youngest participant to win the competition since it began fifteen years ago.
Seth, an SS2 student from a public school in Igando, also broke another record. He is the first male winner in more than eight years after a long run of female champions. His victory earned him an educational grant of ten million naira which will fund his studies at any university in Africa.
The Foundation said Seth was filled with gratitude after his name was announced. He shared that the competition taught him the value of passion and hard work. He described the experience as a journey that strengthened his love for writing and helped him express his ideas with confidence.

Njoku Kelechi Emerald of Christian International High School in Owerri placed second and received a seven point five million naira educational grant. The third prize went to Bayero Fatima Auwal of Cornerstone Montessori Schools in Gudu Abuja who earned a five million naira grant.
All twelve finalists also received new laptops and other learning materials to support their studies. The 2025 edition attracted thousands of entries from schools across Nigeria. Participation increased in rural communities where many students saw the competition as a rare opportunity to showcase their abilities.
UBA Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Oliver Alawuba praised the Foundation for sustaining the competition for fifteen years. He said the initiative continues to rebuild a culture of reading and writing among young people.
